TREASURE TALK

A QUARTERLY PUBLICATION OF TREASURE SALVORS INC~

Today’s the day!

It is very exciting on the ATOCHA site! Memorial Day weekend we found 13 gold bars, 16 emeralds~ mounted in gold, and lots of money (“pieces of eight”). My son, Kane, had been following a trail of ballast stones in an easterly direction from the 9 bronze cannons which we found 9 years ago. For two and a half years he followed that treasure trail only to find ballast stones and nails and it got very boring, so Kane took a break and went for the gold in the quick-sands. He found a little, but the area soon petered out. I directed all the salvage boats and detection boats, men and women, to go to the end of Kane’s line to see if they could pick up the trail which might lead to the “mother lode”. The Saba Rock (a 167-foot “mean diggin’ machine”) found one ballast stone, and we picked up the trail again.

The Saba Rock Captain, Ed Stevens, and the Hatteras Captain, Chip Clemons, detected and recovered some barrel hoops. Then the Dauntless, captained by Kane Fisher found a spike on the ATOCHA site. The Saba Rock found another ballast stone and all of the boats dug many. empty holes for several days, and just when it looked hopeless, we found the gold, emeralds and silver. Susan Nelson was the first diver to find gold and she was so excited she was hyperventilating! She says the first item she found looked like “a piece of yellow plastic” but then she began picking up one gold bar after another.

I jumped into a speedboat and went to the site and put on a tank to find a gold bar, but all I could find was an iron nail! That after-noon many of the crewmembers found more gold bars. I left at sunset and instructed them (jokingly) to find emeralds the next day, but they really did it! K.T. BuddeJones and Syd Jones found the emeralds and all of the other crew found money. We are continuing to follow this trail of ballast stones, nails, pottery, etc., expecting to get to the end of the “rainbow” each day where the “primary cultural deposit” lies. As I am writing this news to you, the Saba Rock and the Dauntless are digging on side scan anomalies which appear to be what we are looking for, so maybe today will be the Day!
