first the internal re—conquest (lasting over 200 years) develops, to be followed by alliances, conquests and annexations which will weld the Spanish nation into one entity, we will see the shield develop until it threatens to burst with the emblems of conquest, and must include on the reverse the symbol of the Pillars of Hercules to indicate “Plus Ultra” —— And the World Beyond! The Philip V coins illustrated are photographs of presentation-coins of this period in mint condition, and are used as source materials for the identification of distinguishing marks on recovered coins. |

ArtifactualIy Speaking Shipwreck material comes in all shapes and sizes. Some shapes are recognizable (i.e. cannon, anchors, gun barrels and the like). Others are not so clear. Perhaps the most tantalizing to the con— servator are the conglomerates. Conglomerates form when objects are deposited in close proximity and, through the concreting action of encrustation (calcarious deposits) they become welded: as it were, together as a single mass. Such masses have no consistent form, although identifiable shapes may be visible on the surface. However, it’s what lies beneath that is intriguing. The conservator must decide how best to proceed with a mass of- material that flow has the consistency of concrete. The best method to find out where to start is to Xray the piece in question. This enables the conservator to see shapes of items imbedded in the conglomerate and to remove the concretion accordingly. |
