PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE POTTERY FINDS FROM NUESTRA SENORA de ATOCHA (1622), 1985 SEASON As expected with the discovery of the lower hull structure of a Spanish galleon of the early seventeenth century, a large number of ceramic sherds, as well as whole vessels, were recovered by Treasure Salvors, Inc. who have worked the site since July of 1985. The effort was the culmination of a 17 year search and followed the successful salvage of the stern section which lies over 7 miles away. Due to the enormous area of scattered wreckage, and the extreme dynamic forces of the environment, relatively few intact pieces survived. The distribution of ceramic types along the wreckage ‘trail’ lends evidence towards creating a distribution pattern of pottery useful in the identification of specific structural sections of shipwreck remains. |
